Remedial LITERACY - Reading, Writing and Numeracy

In response to Covid and massive learning losses for Indonesia's Grade 1 to 3 children, Bali Children Foundation's remedial program is designed to address learning gaps incurred while children were out of school or when the school lacked grade teachers. BCF delivers the classes in upgraded libraries and teaching rooms throughout Bali and Lombok. The new spaces are fitted with projectors and speakers, quality books, child-friendly artwork, carpets, bright cushions or mini desks.

ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE (EFL)

Bali Children Foundation delivers a student-centric English program for Grades 4 through 12. Our classes emphasise spoken and listening English which are essential skills for future employment in Bali. The BCF curriculum is enhanced with videos and presented via a 55-inch smart TV or projector. The engaging technology includes native speaker's conversing in English, and for Elementary students, fun English songs and games. EFL classes provide students with consistent curriculum standards regardless of the school's remote location.

STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering and Math

STEM classes for Grades 4 to 6. Unlike traditional education experiences in which subject areas are handled separately, STEM education emphasises technology and integrated subjects to connect disciplines and relate them to each other. STEM provides remote Elementary school children access to computer learning and has a robust problem-solving emphasis. The Bali Children Foundation curriculum considers environmentally friendly sustainable solutions to many community challenges, including access to water, water safety, sustainable energy, waste management, forestry and soil conservation.

READ TO LEARN

While Indonesians are excellent oral storytellers, they rarely read for leisure. Lack of reading skills affects children's access to learning. As students move into High School and Tertiary learning, the issue becomes acute. Whether seeking information from books or the internet, strong reading skills are vital life skills. BCF uses the newly renovated library spaces to deliver story reading to the younger children and leisure reading resources for the older Elementary school grades. We hope this early emphasis on fun reading will set students up for lifelong learning.

COLLEGE-READY AND WORK-READY PREPARATION

As Education to Employment is our mission, preparation for graduate student's Tertiary education and working life is key to what we deliver. Preparation for further education starts during High School as students learn about available courses of tertiary study, scholarships and apprenticeships. Once students graduate Year 12, they have the option to join orientation classes before commencing academic University degrees, Diploma courses, Hospitality courses, Apprenticeships, Internships or seeking employment. The programs include CV and interview skills, self-confidence, grooming, jobseeker skills and online opportunities, English language, financial literacy and adjustment from Secondary school to University or the workplace. It is an annual program, offered in three streams of 8 weeks of learning for Academic University, Hospitality College and Apprentice, Internship & Work.

ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES

BCF Environmental Studies are delivered across subjects. BCF builds awareness among the children, about the challenges they face in their part of the Archipelago. They will inherit their island and every district has its own issues. In Songan, Bali, deforestation, water and waste management are taught in English and STEM classes. This includes creating a bamboo garden for the children to tend, learn from and later transplant into the forest, aiding soil security and preventing the landslides so frequent in the area.

On Lembongan waste management, food security, clean oceans and soil quality are key issues. Lembongan Recycle Centre, Lembongan Recycle Compost and Lembongan Recycle Community Garden are all Bali Children Foundation Projects established for the community and as education platforms for the children.

In North Bali's ‘rain shadow’ districts with unreliable water supply during the dry season, water conservation, hygiene and health messages enter the curriculum. Waste and forestry management are also important for this area. For Lombok and the Gili's these issues and clean oceans are important.

Across the Remedial Literacy program, English as a Second language and STEM curriculum, the children learn about these problems and are encouraged to find solutions that work in their neighbourhood.
